Received a Suspicious Call? Stop. Hang up. Verify.

A scammer’s biggest tool is panic. They may call claiming there is fraud on your account, a tax debt, or a problem with your benefits. Even if they know your name or address, do not assume they are legitimate. Scammers buy this data to sound believable.

If you receive a suspicious call, follow these steps:

  1. Hang Up Immediately: Get the caller’s name and the company they claim to represent, then end the call.
  2. Verify Independently: Never use the contact info provided by the caller or from a quick Google search (scammers often pay for top search results). If it involves a bank account:
    • Call the number on the back of your bank card.
    • Use the official Bank app or website.
    • Check your most recent official bank statement.
  3. Talk it Out: No real fraud department will ask you to keep a conversation secret. Share your experience with a trusted friend or family member.

Remember: The safest thing to do is hang up immediately and verify the situation through official channels.
