How to Avoid Zelle® Scams

In our increasingly digital world, convenient money transfer services like Zelle® have become essential for quick and hassle-free transactions. Sending money through a payment app is like sending cash. However, with convenience comes the risk of scams and fraudulent activities.

Read below to help you safeguard your finances from scams involving money transfer services.

  1. Verify Recipient Information
Before initiating a transfer, ensure you have the correct recipient information. Mistyped email addresses or phone numbers can lead to funds being sent to the wrong person. Take a moment to verify the recipient’s contact details to avoid costly mistakes. You should know who you are sending money to before using a payment app.
  2. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Requests
One of the most common tactics scammers use is sending unsolicited payment requests. They may pose as a friend or family member in need or utility company saying the bill hasn’t been paid. Always double-check the requestor’s identity and confirm with them through another channel, such as a phone call or text message, before sending any money.
  3. Don’t believe the name on your phone’s caller ID
Scammers can call or text you using a fake caller ID that looks legitimate. If you get a call or a text message from a person, bank or business that you know, be always suspicious if you are asked to send money immediately using a payment service like Zelle®, a wire transfer service like Western Union or MoneyGram, a gift card, or cryptocurrency.
  4. Protect your information
Only use secure and trusted Wi-Fi connections when accessing your banking app or Zelle®. Public Wi-Fi networks can be less secure, making it easier for hackers to intercept your data. Also, create strong, unique passwords for your online banking and Zelle® accounts and never share your password or PIN with anyone.
  5. Monitor your account regularly
If you notice any unauthorized or suspicious activity, report it to your bank immediately. Prompt action can prevent further losses. You can set up transaction alerts that notify you of any activity on your account. Enable these alerts to receive real-time notifications of incoming and outgoing transactions.
